Lateral I is the car that started it all for
Lateral Dynamics. This is the original test mule for the 3-Link
development system, and still sports many of the prototype pieces
that eventually evolved into the current kit. Based on the highly
popular 69 Camaro, the car has undergone many transformations over
the years, and will no doubt continue to evolve in the near future.
This car has shown a tendency to eat engines (no doubt a result of
the owner’s right foot), and as a result, the current engine is
based on the solid Bowtie racing block from GM. At 400 ci, it sports
a set of fully ported Brodix Track 1 heads, full Crower valvetrain
including shaft mounted rockers, and a very healthy solid roller
cam. The rotating assembly uses a Callies crankshaft, Howards rods,
and JE Pistons. To keep things happy on the race track, a custom
road race oil pan was fabricated for the car. A TREMEC TKO
transmission is used, and the rear housing is the 9” Ford based unit
with full floating axles. Shocks are Penske double adjustable, and
brakes are a combination of Alcon Monoblock calipers with rotors
from Coleman Machine. The car currently wears a four point roll cage
made from DOM tubing, and has Cobra Suzuka Kevlar racing seats with
five point harnesses installed. There certainly isn’t much in the
way of creature comforts on this car, but that’s okay.
Future plans for the car are a full replacement of the front
subframe with the prototype Lateral Dynamics First Gen suspension
and subframe, transformation of the roll bar into a full roll cage,
and to put the car on a strict diet to reduce overall weight. Until
then, we’ll just keep driving it and having a great time on the
street and the track.
